Corbett National Park is named after the famous tiger hunter and naturalist Jim Corbett. Corbett National Park is the oldest Wildlife Sanctuary in India and spread over 1200 sq. kms. Corbett National Park is known for the Royal Bengal Tiger and obviously as a launch pad for the prestigious Project Tiger in India. The dense sub-Himalayan jungle, the River Ramganga flowing through the park and an abundance of prey make it an ideal home for the Indian Tiger. The Corbett National Park is situated in the foothills of Kumaon in the Uttarakhand State. The reserve stands at an average altitude ranging between 1000 ft. to 3100 ft. above the sea level. Located in the sub-Himalayan belt, the park is also a famous eco tourism destination. Corbett Park attracts millions of wildlife lovers who come here to witness different habitats.
A spectacular array of animals - notably the Himalayan bear, Yellow throated Martens, Leopards, Otters, Barking Deers, Nightjars, the Bengal Tiger, over 500 species of birds and a variety of aquatic animals can make the Corbettt Animal Safari an experience of a lifetime. And while you are busy spotting the tiger, you can also soak in the rich fauna of the Jim Corbett Park - a total of 488 different species. The jeep safari allows the wildlife enthusiast to cover large distances in the jungle in a short span of time, allowing tourists, wildlife lovers and photographers to cover large tracts of park in a day. Open jeep roofs allow for a good 360 degrees view of the wild jungle around, while the vehicle also provides ample security to the animal watchers.
The Jim Corbett National Park is a birdwatcher's dream-come-alive. It is fabulously rich in its avifauna; according to a survey carried out by the Zoological Survey of India, Corbett is home to as many as 585 different species of birds including our favourite - the amazingly beautiful 'Long Tailed Broadbill'. Amongst the many avian delights of Corbett are a large number of water-birds (about 15 kinds of ducks alone), night birds such as the scary sounding Franklin's Nightjar and a variety of migratory birds including the Great Black-headed Gull and the Booted Hawk-Eagle. Other birds you can look out for at the Jim Corbett National Park are Oriental-Pied Hornbill, Emerald Dove, Red Wattled Lapwing, the Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Crested Kingfisher, Indian Shikra, Indian Alpine Swift, Mynahs and Bulbuls.
